Chapter Eighteen

“Levi, I’ve been meaning to ask… why does your dragon wear a boy’s uniform?” Elizabeth leaned her head on Levi’s shoulder as she looked at Flix. The dragon had chosen to climb up behind Glint, but so far was behaving. Levi hadn’t heard a squeal of pain to indicate she was tugging on the swamp imp’s ears yet.

Levi grinned. “Flix, do you want to wear a dress?” he called to the dragon ahead of him.

“Dress bad!” she yelled. Flix turned to look at him and stuck out her tongue with a grumpy face. Nox put her hands over her face and ducked her head. Levi turned to look back at Elizabeth.

“Nox took Flix dress shopping, but it didn’t exactly go well. Maybe you can ask Nox to fill us in while we ride?”

Nox elbowed him in the stomach, and he let out a grunt. It didn’t stop him from snickering as she looked back over her shoulder at him. When she sighed and slumped, he knew he’d won.

“Okay, fine. It was a short trip to the town of Asail, it should have been a simple journey. There’s a small airship that flies between the castle and Asail every few hours. I took Flix, and we went shopping. We were having a lot of fun, right Flix?” Nox asked.

Flix raised an arm and stuck her thumb into the air in agreement. Then went back to staring at Glint’s ears.

Zuzan chittered and waved her arms from her position on top of Elizabeth’s head. Levi looked back to get a better sense of what she was saying. Nox seemed to have no problem hearing the squirrel, however. “Yes, Zuzan, next time I’ll take you shopping. Still, we were having a good time. There was this lovely bakery and… anyway.” Nox shifted the direction of her story when Levi poked her in the back and nipped her shoulder. “The seamstress has this beautiful, little store with changing rooms and dresses hanging on the walls. They even have a spinning stand in the middle of the store you can turn to look at different clothes! I found a purple sundress that I thought would look great on Flix.”

Levi could see where this was going, and his smile was getting wider. He glanced back and saw Elizabeth looking confused. Nox began talking again before he could comment.

“Well, I gave the dress to Flix and sent her into the changing room to try it on… I never stopped to consider that the poor dear hadn’t ever worn a dress before. She tried to put it on and got caught up in the straps. I had reminded her to be careful not to tear it, so she didn’t just rip herself free… but the dress covered her eyes, and she lost her balance. She crashed through the dressing room wall and right into the display stand. Everything broke, and the shopkeepers were upset. Poor Flix didn’t enjoy that at all.”

Flix crossed her arms behind Glint and let out a grumbling sound.
